Hotel de la Syrene

SORRENTO: We'd been warned about prices in Sorrento, but in hindsight, as I write from Florence, they weren't that bad at all. Of course, we may have been lucky, and I think booking well in advance made all the difference.

First there was the hostel - 30 euros a night for a balcony and a view of the bay (or rather, glimpse of the water between the apartments opposite... but a view nonetheless!). A bargain really.

Then there was this little place, the Hotel de la Syrene. Em and Graham must've almost passed out when, on our return from Marina Grande, I suggested we have one beer at this place, with a view to die for, overlooking the bay back toward Vesuvius. It was a bit of a discovery, really, as the entrance wasn't obvious, and it was on a small patch of the cliff quite removed from the commercial, historical centre - and there was only one other couple there, to enjoy the view.

To top it off, our one beer each was no more expensive than anywhere else - it was in fact the same price I paid for a can of coke yesterday at the Uffizi Gallery, here in Florence - though much more worth it.
